34. Granted there is a large pinch of socioeconomics at play - but I think there is also some nostalgia at play. My grandfather taught me how to build balsa wood aircraft. It was slow and methodical and required huge amounts of patience. He told me that if I built 50 of them, perfectly, he would buy me a remote control aircraft. Sadly, he died when I was around 12. When I got to my 50th aircraft some years later, I promised myself that one day I'd take to the skies in his honour. I had a dream of a 3/4 channel aircraft. I imagined that one day cameras would become miniaturised enough to be involved. Many years later, when drones came along, I was whipped back to this childhood dream, where all my aspirations for unmanned flight had come to fruition.
I'd imagine there are many similar stories in to 40-60 category.
That's a beautiful story, and the rest well said. Thanks for sharing. My father flew spitfires during the war and passed away a couple of decades ago now, but I know that he'd get a kick out of this hobby too. Once you've been into the sky I suspect you never leave...
I now have a P4 and P4P. Why? Because I can. :-) It's handy to have the two, as my girlfriend gets to fly with me and she's really keen now. She actually hassles me to take the drones out now... |
