Aloha victor,

     If I recall right, "Gimbal Lock" is a benefit when taking photos.  Video has a lot of maneuvering involved that smooths out the video.  I can imagine a long shutter would especially benefit from a locked gimbal.  But really it would depend on how you are taking the photo and what the conditions are.

I noticed at low light conditions and "longer" exposure while orbiting around an object the pictures turn out better when not locking the gimbal.
