I have read the manual and I cannot find the answer to my question.  There is a small button on the front of the gimble that I am sure has a function but I cannot find it in the manual.

Does anyone know what it does?  My only guess, and I am not willing to try it, is that it might format the SD card but that is done through the software so I rather think not.  Any way, I am at a loss to figuring out what it does.

It is for manual operation of the camera  .

Check Page 14 of the latest Manual.

User manual v1.4, Page 14:

Camera Function Buttons
Capture: Press (hold less than 2 seconds) to take a single capture.
Record: Press (hold more than 2 seconds) to begin recording. Press again to stop.

@canula, If you refer to the user manual on page 11, you would find this is infact a camera function button. You may use this button to take picture or video in the event of DJI Vision App is not available.  Rest assure that you will not have your SD card formatted by pressing this button.
