I live on a farm in PA, and I am getting a mavic drone, do I need a license to fly it here? Also, later this summer I am going on a vacation to the virgin islands, will I need a license there? We are renting a boat for just our family and I want to fly my mavic, will I need one on the boat too? Thanks!

In simple answer, no.

For recreational use. You can only fly line of sight and 400FT Altitude in the US.

Flying in populated areas, like cities and roads is forbidden.

Flying in National Parks is also not allowed.

"Virgin Islands" is a little vague, because some are Puerto Rican while others are American or British territories and the specific regulations can vary somewhat between them.

As far as flying over your own farm, as long as you're "flying for fun" (recreationally), then you don't need a license. You should review the FAA's information on what the rules are and a summary can be found here. The one that seems to affect the most people is the FAA's requirement that you notify any airport or heliport within 5 miles of your flight prior to flying.

There's no blanket prohibition from flying in populated areas or over roads in the United States, but Route77 is correct that piloting your drone while you're within a national park is forbidden by the National Park Service.

400 ft is recommended only...  It is not a requirement for Hobby.  Part 107 commercial, and it is a requirement.

With that said, 400 ft is a good recommendation and I have never exceeded it.

You can fly above national parks but you cannot fly inside of them. At least that is what I know, and heard.

It is, you can only fly more that 400 ft if you are an exception, anyway dont do it.

Some states and municipalities have also adopted UAV restrictions in addition to FAA.  Most of these laws seem to deal with  privacy, surveillance and harassment. Some municipal rules deal with takeoff and landing on municipal property (above ground still belongs to the FAA).

Now that we don't have to register our drones anymore for recreational flying.  Is it pretty much do your own thing kind of flying(other than no flying over or near federal buildings, parks, over people and no above 400 ft)? Does any recreational droners have more freedom?
