Has anyone done this? I got scared about reading about installing "Litchi" with Google Installer 2.0 will brick the Smart Controller.

You can just install the Litchi APK and then select the map to map box,  you dont need the google bits.

I use a personal hot spot usually so Ive not investigated offline maps.

My total usage on the smart controller in the last week and a half and 5 flights was 50mb.

Thanks for that info. I imagined somehow that it would be much more, tethering your phone to the SC.

I just did another test,   checked before and after and an 11,295 ft flight (about 10 mins) used 10mb of data.   I have unlimited data on my plan so it not really a problem.  In fact Ive used 1.4TB of data this year so far.

Great,again, thanks for the info. Just as an aside, if I may? When you use the 'hotspot' is your map distance limited in any way apart from normal Notam restrictions?
