I know anything magnetic is not good for the drones, the Ipad has a pretty strong on inside, how far away from the ipad should you get when doing a compass calibration and IMU ?

The iPad has a little influence on the aircraft, the environment around should be the main concern.
When calibrating IMU, please make sure you put aircraft in a very level surface.
And calibrating compass in a place without interference around.
