I always shoot in 4:3. It provides a resolution of 4000 x 3000. If you shoot 16:9, the camera simply crops off some of the top and bottom, giving 4000 x 2250. You can always do the cropping later in the computer.
Wow, that is super counter-intuitive.
We all grew up being told that 16:9 was the original aspect ratio for movies, and that 4:3 (NTSC) was "reformatted" (i.e. cropped) to "fit our screen." Decades.
And now, this is a 4:3 image sensor, which is a similar ratio to NTSC, and in order to get 16:9 it has to crop the top and bottom.
I did some quick testing and, sure enough, 4:3 is the "whole picture" and 16:9 is cropped top and bottom.
I'm glad I found this topic, and able to test the results myself. Blew my mind.
