I wish I had the money for this! I finally saw a P4 flying a few days ago as my neighbor got one! We showed me it up close.

Thats not right, unless you have the "distance limit" feature enabled. Per this page: https://www.dji.com/product/phantom-4/info

Max Transmission Distance:
- FCC Compliant: 3.1 mi ( 5 km );
- CE Compliant: 2.2 mi ( 3.5 km )( Unobstructed, free of interference )


Go into your settings, disable the distance limit. You should go way past 500m.

Does it lose image transmission at 500 meters?

Please try it in an open field, it should be able to fly at least 1 mile.  Also, check the video to place your antenna  

just a quick note to Australian residents that if purchasing from the DJI website, you will pay a substantial premium over what residents of the US or other countries will pay. As an example, P4 battery will set you back A$289 against a US resident paying US$169 (around A$220 based on current exchange rates) Car charger kit would cost US $62 Again, around A$85 on worst exchange rate but Australian residents pay A$129. Also, US residents obtain free postage after spending $99 but for Australian residents, the threshhold is A$429
DJI claim the difference is because of VAT (laughable).
Would strongly recommend Australian resident perhaps consider their options before purchasing direct from DJI

GST is 10%, but like most international companies they overcharge in Australia.
So either you can buy on eBay from international sellers, or use a service like reship.com to give a USA address and forward it. The landed price then is about 25% less after paying for shipping and the 10% GST.
I don't know about any warranty complications however.

I buy in mid-July and pay full price, then weeks later this sale...sure does leave a sour taste in ones mouth. A bit peed off is putting it mildly...
