I turn on internet, just long enough to get maps in device, then go back to airplane mode,then power on mavic.. maps cache in ipad, not sure if its automatic or if I just have good settings to make it work that way

how about using an adapter with the original DJI cable?

the 6in lightning cable works (bought one and its not too short), a 90 degree bend would be better
