Some DJI dealers/reseller tell me the parts will be available in "2-3 weeks".
There is an eBay seller with spare brakets already.
I also broke the restraining piece, which I expect everyone else as too, since this is the reason the cable gets torn (the gimbal going beyond it's normally limited range). My plan is to fix this with glue and wire.
DJI support are being unhelpful. My guess is they do not have spare flex cables themselves yet. Here is the email thread so far:

Dear Chris,
Thank you for your reply.
Apologize for so much trouble. But please understand that we do not sell repairing spare parts to customers as we do not suggest customers repairing the items on their own.
So I am afraid it will need to send back for repairing. Kindly send me your residential address, I will update on the system.
Your repair case has been recorded as case#: [CAS-***]
Please pack your item well and ship your item for repair to the address:
DJI Technology Australia, 12/125 Highbury Road, Burwood VIC 3125, Australia
Attn: Aron
Please download attached DJI Technical Support Form, fill it in and enclose a hard copy in your package.
A confirmation email will be sent to you once your package is received by our repair centre. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you for contacting DJI.
Best Regards,
Justin Liao

Hi Justin,
Thanks again for writing. As you may know, flex-gimbal cables for DJI products (including at least Phantom 2, Phantom 3, and Phantom 4 pro) are abundantly available in many places, including from the DJI store itself - e.g.:
http://store.dji.com/product/phantom-4-flexible-gimbal-flat-cable
They are possibly the most common replacement part after the propellers? (it's the first thing to break when a camera impacts anything)
I do understand that the Mavic is a brand new product, so it probably takes time for spare parts to reach the store.
I also understand that this is a specialist part requiring special equipment to install (which I own), and that owing to the size, delicacy, etc of the task, it would obviously not be a recommended repair for anyone except a professional (like me, or, like your repair staff).
However, whoever told you "we do not sell repairing spare parts to customers" is obviously mistaken (refer above link to your own store!)
Do you have a phone number I can contact you on please?
I will need to know for-sure exactly how a "repair" might be carried out, and what the cost is going to be. If you do not have replacement flex cables yet, I would imagine this will mean that you will be replacing a large number of otherwise perfect good parts (including the camera and gimbal), and since I doubt a "crash" is warranty repair eligible, this might mean that I will be billed hundreds of dollars unnecessarily - possibly more money even that it would cost me to buy a whole new camera and gimbal assembly and fit it myself!
If you *do* have a flex cable in your repair shop, my preference is to fit it myself, so I do not have to pay the labor of your repair staff who would have to pull apart the assembly to install the cable; if this is the case, and you refuse to send me a cable, my next best preference would be simply to send the gimbal to you (not the entire drone), which will save a huge amount of engineer time (and my money paying for postage and their labor!)
My address for your records is:
***
Kind Regards,
Chris

Dear Chris,
Thank you for your email.
I will try to explain this issue to you:
Kindly understand that the design and structure of Mavic Pro is totally different from Phantom serials. The gimbal camera is connecting to the top head frame of the aircraft. To exchange this cable, customer will need to disassemble the whole shell of the aircraft. It will easily cause further damage for not professional disassembling. Even dealers are not authorized to fix gimbals at the moment.
So please reconsider this and send back the item for repairing.
Best Regards,
Justin Liao

Hi Justin,
I have already removed the flex cable without issues - it was no harder than a phantom. My original plan was to repair the cable itself, however, the damage is right on a corner of the flex which makes the likelihood of a repair failing too high, hence my need to replace the cable itself now.
Can I post you back the broken cable for a replacement perhaps? If not, can I post back the gimbal for you to replace the cable in it instead of me (seems silly, since I'm ready to insert the new cable already).
Do you have a phone number you can share with me (or can you phone me? +61**)? I cannot understand how it's possible to repair my gimbal, but not possible to send me the part - and I need to know an estimate for the price before I go down that route. If you are planning to give me a whole new gimbal and camera assembly instead of just replacing the flex cable, I will absolutely need to know how much $ that's going to cost in advance!
Kind Regards,
Chris |
