Stumped 3 Machines; No Image Transmission!

In the decades I’ve been flying, I’ve had some real strange stuff happen with model helicopters but this one has me stumped!

Three weeks ago I had a shoot and took my Inspire 1 and three Phantom 3 Pro’s ran them all up everything checked out fine - we finished the job a few days later and put the machines back in their perspective cabinet for storage.

Three days ago (3 weeks later from last run-up) I pull them back out for another gig take them out to run them up and guess what?  The Inspire 1 and two of the Phantom 3’s Pro's now have the same exact problem;

“No Image Transmission”

This is nearly impossible that three of the four machines would all have the same exact problem at the same exact time almost as if there was a self-destruct timer in the machines. All the machines are stored in the same air conditioned area.

Since I really need the Inspire the most - she goes in for Exploratory Surgery. The diagnoses is; Everything on the Inspire works perfect (except no image) it flies fine, Sats locks, IMU good, calibrates fine, etc.,etc.  When I record video or stills, it records the data fine on the chip. When I stick the chip in my Mac, everything is normal good quality and clear playback. The second remote trans also works perfect.

This is just a "Few" of the different options I’ve tried the past three days with no luck or change.

Tried three different transmitters
Changed 3 Batteries
Changed the micro chips
Re-installed the same firmware on machine
Install latest Firmware on machine
Re-Installed latest firmware on the transmitter
Re-installed the Go App
Tried 2 different iPad Mini’s
Try iPhone 6 +
Try a Samsung S7
Remove the camera and cleaned all the contacts
Try countless different combinations on the app i.e. 4K, 1080 decoding, etc.

None of these machine have ever been down, hit, tipped over, never even had a bad landing inthe years I've owned them - they are perfect. If anyone has some suggestions I’m all ears. I do not want to ship these machine out of my site, so I’m looking for options>

Many Thanks Mike

More than likely you have a corrupted video module on the Inspire 1 camera , I have seen this countless times , please read my post #4 on the link and get the Hidden file .  This is what you need to see to verify if it needs to go in .
http://forum.dji.com/forum.php?m ... =1&extra=#pid653579
This does sound odd that all of them would go out at the same time .  You are saying the ONLY symptom is NO live video on all of them is that correct ?  You can record and take pics to the SD card and have all of the other data transmitted to the Go app , Just NO LIVE VIDEO .
Did you happen to update all of the Aircraft at the same time , was anything different on the 4th Phantom that is not affected ?

Do you have four seprate remotes for each system ?
Can you get an I pad Pro for just  testing purposes ? In my opninon the I pad pro is the gold standard, if you do not have the "device not detected" on lines 0800 and 1500 then I would suspect the go app device . The I pad Minis dont have the Power ( below the Mini 4 anyway ......Now I know some mebers use the Mini no problem , but there are other factors as well such as RC transmit power, amount of gigs available on the Mini ,Is hardware decode enabled ??? recording to the go app devce etc., record settings on the go app, severe interference in the area . etc etc.  )

You may have a combination of problems , say the Inspire has the DND ( like above  0800 and 1500 ) and others are problems with the power of the go app device .
By the way you are a legend in the world of  RC Helicopters so I know you are an excellent Pilot , I remeber Model Helicopter Technique Had an article about you .
I go back a ways in the world of RC as well !

***Also do you happen to have another Cable for the RC to the Go app device , I would replace for sure if cant pinpoint the poblem ,  looking for common denominators  that may be the root cause .

Thanks for the reply Donnie and the kind words LOL yeah things were a bit simpler back then electronically but much more difficult for the pilots!  I'm sure we must have crossed paths back then!

As an update; one of my P3 P's came somewhat back to life - On start up its taking twice as long to acquire video but it is working. The other P3 is like the Inspire dead on image transmission.

Regarding the Inspire - yes it records video fine  just can't see it live there is no transmission. I did try different usb cables and tried the decode in both positions.  I'll see if I can find a new Mini but I did try 4 different devices to include two an Iphone 6+ and a new Samsung S7. I'll go ahead and read you post and get the hidden file as you requested. I live in the woods they don't even know what gas stations are up here so I have no interference. This morning I stuck the Inspire in my truck I'm going to try it in a few different locations in the event someone is shooting RF over my location. I'll get back to you, good meeting up with you and thanks!

Just to make sure that both components are communicating properly, try these button combinations:

Resetting the RC of odd presets:
* Turn on the controller, and the aircraft should be off.
* Press C1, C2, and shutter on the controller then turn the controller off.
* While holding the buttons, turn on the RC, then the aircraft and relink the remote.

Manually relink the RC to the aircraft:
* Turn on both the aircraft and the controller.
* Press C1, C2, and the record button on the controller, then the controller will make a "D-DD" audio queue. This may take a few seconds of holding it.
* While holding the buttons, press the wheel on the right side of the controller (ISO) and then the LED indicator on the controller will turn blue and it will constantly beep "DDDD".
* Use a pen to click the linking button on the aircraft in and hold for 3-5 seconds, and then take the pen off the aircraft and wait, it will be linked soon.

In addition, try cleaning the gimbal connection contacts on both the gimbal and aircraft end. Let me know if that helps.

Mike
I see you are in good hands already, after reading all your information one thing popped out at me.

I had this happen with both my Inspire 1 and P3P.  Try relinking the aircraft either using the Go App or manually. I used the Go App and afterwards everything came back online

Donnie,

Hello I just finished the hidden file and it appears I have the same problem "Device Not Detected" on 08 00  & 15 00.

Does this mean my Inspire has to be put in an induced Coma for DJI brain surgery? LOL

Thanks - Mike

Hello I just finished the hidden file and it appears I have the same problem "Device Not Detected" on 08 00  & 15 00.

Mike

Sorry, that will require DJI to repair this for you. The #8, 15 modules are corrupted and that is a real shame to see.

DJI will be able to sort this out of you and hopefully they will cover it under warranty

Mike, before sending in, please check two parts of the aircraft:
  • 1. Try to wipe the copper sheet as picture shows with 95% alcohol and cotton swab.
  • 2. Try to remove and reinsert the 8-pin cables tightly in the gimbal.

Then please update the latest firmware again.

Mindy , do you have this Idea from an engineer or something ?  I personally have NEVER seen the  molex pins being loose or dirty solve this particular problem .  Did  you see the Hidden file ?

Just wondering If I have missed something ?  Or have many of these repairs performed by DJI with the "Device Not Detected " been just in need of cleaning ........
It was my understanding with both lines of code ( 0800 and 1500 Device Not Detected )  that this was a definitive failure as both lines of code would not indicate "Device Not Detected " if it was just a loose or dirty connector .

I am going to feel like a real idiot for telling members that this was  a Unrepairable Code  ( Device Not Detected on lines 0800-- AND  1500 )  if you are telling me a fix can be as simple as  cleaning the Molex connector. Mindy you have the Engineers ear  so I would assume one of them told you that the "Device Not Detected  on lines 0800 and 1500 could be just a loose or dirty connection .

Please help me understand , as I have NEVER had a member tell me the Camera  that went in for repair ( for Device Not Detected on lines 0800 and 1500 )  just needed the Pins cleaned or they were loose .

thanks

Donnie,

Hello I just finished the hidden file and it appears I have the same problem "Device Not Detected" on 08 00  & 15 00.

Mike I have seen this countless times, personally I have NEVER heard or seen  cleaning the molex pins solve this particular  issue as it was my understanding that when you have BOTH  lines of code 0800 AND 1500  saying  "Device Not Detected" that at Minimum the camera would need to go in for service . Then again I dont have the schematic in front of me either .  ( DJI hides that like Colonel Sanders Chicken spice  recipe apparently .  ( just kidding but you get me point )  I suppose anything is Possible .
If you have a moment check the phantoms  Hidden file as well, Curious as to what they say as well .  ( the ones giving the issues of course )

You are of course welcome to try and clean and or Inspect the connector , after all Mindy is DJI and I am just a forum member .  I would assume she would have the ear of the engineers .
Make sure that after you do an update to the system that you remove the SD card and have it reformatted before placing back in the aircraft .  The reason being is that a SD card with an update on it and turning on the RC  transmitter can cause this exact isssue  of failure to the Video module .

Make sure in general that you never have the RC ON  when updating  the Aircraft as well .   Not sure if this was what happened with you , I just know this can cause the problem for sure .

Many thanks for all the reply''s and tips Guys its very much appreciated -

I'll scrub the connectors with a good eraser to see if that works. If it is the board,  I'm thinking maybe the Inspire and P3P might share the same board??  These machine were all bought within weeks of each other so they are all related sisters, which might account for all three machines having the same problem in the same time period.   The third machine that came back to life is still kicking but its taking a lot longer than normal for the video to appear. I'll jump on her tonight install all the latest firmware to see if it works and if not I'll pull the hidden file as well.

You mentioned it might be fixed under warranty however I've had these for over a year now - would this defect be covered under another provision.

Have a great Day!

Mike

Hello - OK I cleaned the Inspire camera terminals with regretfully no difference.

Tonight I upgraded the P3P then pulled the hidden file and it come up wit the same error as the Inspire; "Device Not Detected" on the 08 00 and 15 00 lines so I assume they both have the same exact problem.

Going back all the way to the firt P1 release , I've never had to send a machine or item back to DJI so please let me know how to proceed.

I would really like to thank you guys for the help in determining the problem.

Regards Mike

Mike , did you happen to have the SD card(with the latest Firmware installed)  installed  and in the camera when this all started ?  Just wondering why it would happen to  several of you AC at the same time ,This is the only thing I can think of .  It sure seems odd to me and DJI should take note of this happening all at once .  If  you did NOT have the update on the SD card then I find it seriously strange that they would all do this at one . ( One AC is bad enough but I think you said this was on 3 of them , be sure to check the Hidden file on the others )

Did you happen to update them all at the same time? Then put them in the storage cabinet for 3 weeks before exposing the problem?

Donnie thanks for the reply -  all three machine were running 1.4.0.10 software - I generally never upgrade my machines.  As I mentioned, all three machine were bought at the same time, maybe a bad run of chips?  Three weeks ago all the machine were fine.  Where is the transmit board located - can I switch the boards myself or does it have to go in for sure?

I did want to mention that the Inspire camera right from the get-go never would record 4K video.  The dealer I bought it from jacked me around and never replaced the camera.

Thanks - Mike

EDIT: Went out for a quick shot of a tower and my 2nd P3P (3rd machine) just joined the others so now all three machines have the same no image transmission problem.

Now with three machines grounded - I really need to get this addressed and fixed as soon as possible. This does not seem to be a normal failure with three machine going down within days of each other. Therefore I'm hoping someone could provide a contact regarding this issue to hopefuly have DJI bear the burden for the repair of all three machine.   I appriciate everyone's past and any future help in this matter!

Many Thanks Mike

Hello guys - could I get some directive regarding returning the 3 machines - is the transmit module in the cameras or will i have to send the entire machine .

I was also inquiring if I would be responsible for the repair since it appears to be a component fault.

Hi, Donnie, yes, these are suggestions by our engineer. Here is chain of image transmission : camera--gimbal lines-- encoder inside of camera--gimbal contact--pin cable-- USB transmission inside of aircraft body--RC... 08 00 and 15 00 means these two parts I have blacked are failed to be detected, so what customer can have a try is to clean the contact and reinsert the pin cable, the posibility to solve this problem may be tiny but there is a chance, that's why we give this suggestion. Hope I made this clear, Donnie.

Mike ,this part is for the HDMI module on the back of the RC transmitter , so this one would NOT work for sure .  This would be for a "Not Detected " warning on the go app, meaning the go app and RC are not communicating . There are other things that can cause it  ( like a bad Cable betweeen the RC and Go app )  but this can fix that issue quite often after d7e dilligence has been done to eliminate other issues.

This has happened after the update. Contacts are clean. Can it be sorted out without sending it to DJI ?

Thanks for the reply - a friend sent me that image of the board for the Inspire so I'll assume that will not work.  So where exactly is the board that needs to be replaced on the Inspire 1.

Also the second image for the P3P I found i believe is a correct replacement for the Phantom 3 - could you confirm that for me?

Any part of the chain may cause the firmware fail to be updated, this needs to be evaluated by our repair team, I'm sorry that I'm unable to provide more information to you. Like I said, if the gimbal contact and the cable have been double checked, but the 0800 and 1500  still fail to be detected, the drone must be sent in for repair. Thank you for your understanding.

Mindy Thanks for the reply!

Since all three machines (Inspire 1 & 2- P3P) failed at the same exact time and non of these machines have even had a hard landing,  is there any chance that DJI would be responsible for all or part of the repair?

There is going to be major cost to just ship and insure three machines let alone the repair cost.

What would be the closest repair facility to Atlanta Ga?

Thanks - Mike

Hello Donnie,
I am having the same problem with my inspire 1- no image transmission and Device Not Detected" on 08 00  & 15 00 lines.
This has happened after the update. Contacts are clean. Can it be sorted out without sending it to DJI ?

Not that I am aware of .  Mindy mentioned to clean the contacts but I have not seen any luck with that .

Be sure to at least inspect the wiring harness as  well for any kinks etc.  This is between the Gimbal and the Aircraft, also check the pins that mesh between the Gimbal and the Vibration mount.  These are long shots but with a look .

Did you happen to have the RC transmitter ON when updating the Aircraft OR did you keep the update on the SD card and then fire up the RC transmitter ?  Either one of these can cause the "NO Image " problem.

Mindy , I have seen this MANY TIMES .  I do  notice a correlation among members who update there aircraft systems via the Sd card  and at that time have the RC transmitter ON-  OR they have the update on the SD card after an update and then turn on the RC transmitter .  Is there any way the engineers can check this out and see indeed if it is causing the "No Image " failure on the systems ..  If so it needs to be changed somehow in the update process or it needs to be more well know that this can happen .

It just  seems that so many members get a corrupted video module after an update.  and usually the only other correlation is the RC transmitter being on at the same time*****NOT in every case but many that I have seen .

Just want to get to the bottom of this so we can prevent members from having this common problem .

Mindy Thanks for the reply!

Since all three machines (Inspire 1 & 2- P3P) failed at the same exact time and non of these machines have even had a hard landing,  is there any chance that DJI would be responsible for all or part of the repair?

Mike, this issue of "No Image Transmission Signal" happen to me twice during last 3 weeks, affecting both of my drones (P3P and I1P) simultaneously. However, as I moved the birds to a different location (back into cellular coverage region), the warnings disappeared and drones were functioning normally. Aircrafts are controlled by Go app 3.1.2 on the same iPad Air2, with an older firmwares.

It's is unlikely that the failure to transmit the image is happening with all your drones at once due to some sort of hardware malfunctioning! I'm almost certainly sure our drones are just fine, but there is another way of crippling them. Perhaps tablet failure, I don't know ... All these numerous DJI drones malfunctions/lock-outs/cripplings happen during last 2-3 weeks all around the world ... I'm trying to get to the bottom of this as well, but the communication with official DJI sources is very difficult from my camper in the middle of nowhere ...

I agree the No Image transmission can happen on occasion ( it has to me on many occasions ) but when it never comes back ( the live video )I have them  ( members with problems like this ) check the 0800 and 1500 for the dreaded "Device not Detected "

I think you may be on the right track though, he may have the Inspire with the DND on lines 08-00 and 1500 but he may only be experiencing some other problem on his other birds.  I would suggest he places the latest version of FW that he has on his Phanotms and check the Hidden log on them as well to verify the problem , does that sound like a good course of action ?  would you agree  Dr. Dobie ?

Mike , when you are getting no image on the Phanoms  is that ALL the TIME or just part of the time ?   If is is  only on occasion then that is another problem somewhere in your system, could be the I pad not having enough power  for example .  Did this occur right after an update by any chance and have you tried another I pad ?  An I pad pro is the gold standard ( In my opinion ). Also have you checked the hidden file on the other  Phantom systems .  I think your Inspire is going to need to go in for sure, but we need to look at the hidden file on the phantoms  to make sure that is the problem . I think you have two different problems going on here myself.
Also notice that you say you have tried diffeent transmitters on your systems , when you did so you did Re link them correct ?  The ONLY problem you have is NO LIVE VIDEO  is that corre, alll slse works perfect on the Phanomts ???.  Before sending in the Phanotms I would first look at the hidden files on them  and see what they say , If they DO NOT HAVE  the DND on lines 0800 and 1500 as well then i wouold definitly suspect the I pad not being powerful enough.  Beg  borrow or steal ( kidding ) and I pad pro for testing purposes, BEST BUY has a very generous return policy , so you could test it out and if it works keep it and if not return it .

MIke , the board that has failed  ( encoder )  I call it ( wrongly ) the "video module" on your system ( inspire ) is inside the camera .  I have NEVER heard of anyone being able to fix theres on there own as it also needs to be programmed .  ( from what i have heard and read , never have happened to me )   also it may just need to be re flashed if it is only corrupted.  If ccorrupted I hear it is around 70 dollars to re flash .  If it is smoked it may be a total loss .  Go to the Sevice tab and get and RMA number going .

Donnie, I really don't know ... As it happens only twice to my birds (last time July 2) and disappeared the next day at different location, I have absolutely no idea what's going on. All accessible hardware connections triple-checked OK, device overheating eliminated, everything is working fine for now ... Or - maybe - my 1 yr old, trusty iPad Air2 is dying ... However, the more I'm thinking about these reported issues with video transmission lost in some places, the more I tend to believe in some sort of remotely inflicted "injures" or "spanking" to those who operate the drones with older, obsolete (?) FW and Go app. I'm very prone to believe in conspiracy theory, I must admit ... If that's possible, than only God can save us ...

Matthew.

I don't think the No Image Transmission issue related to the transmitter or the updating process, but we do suggest to update aircraft firstly and then RC, turn the RC off when updating aircraft. If the firmware fail to be updated because of 0800 and 1500, the gimbal contact and cable are fine, the drone will need to be sent in, our repair team will take care of it.

Thanks for all the reply's guys!

I also thought it was interference so i piled them all in my truck and took them miles away with no luck.

This is just a "Few" of the different options I’ve tried the past three days with no luck or change.

Tried three different transmitters
Changed 3 Batteries
Changed the micro chips
Unplugged and re-plgged all the connectors
Cleaned all the connections
Re-installed the same firmware on machine
Install latest Firmware on machine
Re-Installed latest firmware on the transmitter
Re-installed the Go App
Tried 2 different iPad Mini’s
Try iPhone 6 +
Try a Samsung S7
Remove the camera and cleaned all the contacts
Try countless different combinations on the app i.e. 4K, 1080 decoding, etc.

After they failed I updated them correctly to the latest firmware.

If there is no communication to 0800 and 15 00 I think that eliminates a firmware problem.  The odds of all three machine having the connection problems would be very slim - I feel the down link board is poorly designed since I'm not the only one with this problem.

Is this the correct board attached for the P3P?
I show it as Part #124

Also where would the transmit board be on the Inspire and would you have the DJI Part # for it?

Thanks Mike

Mindy,

Hi, while I greatly appreciate your past help, I need immediate assistance to resolve this issue.  With this widespread failure of these video boards on virtually every forum regarding the Inspire 1 and P3P failures - this has become a epidemic. There is even post where owners had these boards replaced only for them to go down again.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but its not right for me to bear the expense of shipping and insurance of three machines and repair cost for a board or firmware glitch that has this widespread failure, that might even re-occur after being repaired. I can't afford to travel to jobs with non dependable equipment.  Please communicate with whom ever to allow me a trade in allowance on these three machines that I may upgrade to other platforms (I2 P4) that are dependable.

I am under contract with a number of firms for aerial work therefore I need to get equipment back in the air immediately.

If anyone at DJI needs to contact me regarding this matter, my email is: rotory@earthlink.net

Thanks for your assistance in this matter-  Mike

Hello - OK I cleaned the Inspire camera terminals with regretfully no difference.

Tonight I upgraded the P3P then pulled the hidden file and it come up wit the same error as the Inspire; "Device Not Detected" on the 08 00 and 15 00 lines so I assume they both have the same exact problem.

Mike can you send me the whole hidden file so I can figure it out ?  My e mail is

donaldjames1990@gmail.com

This way I can see what FW was on it originally and when it failed.  If you can't or dont have the time I understand, Just wanted to figure out when this took place to help you AND   members in the future .

I would like to see the files "Above" what you posted  please . As they are listed from top = first firmware loaded to bottom = latest  firmware . Maybe I can figure out when and why it failed .

Like I said only if you have a minute , if not no biggie .

Or you can post it here , whatever is easiest for you .
