Hello all, FAA regulations say that I can not fly the drone over 400 feet. Generally, I take off from a low point on a hill, and I am aware that the DJI Mavic Pro tracks its altitude from its original take-off position. If I fly to the top of the hill, am I legally allowed to climb higher than the 400 feet altitude registered on my controller considering my actual altitude between the drone and the ground has gotten smaller?

I was able to find a very helpful answer from a separate article that says, "[size=14.6667px]During discussion, it was clarified that 400ft from the ground ISN'T ALWAYS CORRECT.

[size=14.6667px]It is 400 FEET FROM THE HIGHEST STRUCTURE.

[size=14.6667px]Part 107 states:

[size=14.6667px]You can fly during daylight or in twilight (30 minutes before official sunrise to 30 minutes after official sunset, local time) with appropriate anti-collision lighting. Minimum weather visibility is three miles from your control station. The maximum allowable altitude is 400 feet above the ground, and higher if your drone remains within 400 feet of a structure. The maximum speed is 100 mph (87 knots).[size=14.6667px]

[size=14.6667px]So for anyone else wondering just be self-aware that it is altitude from the ground currently beneath the drone!
