Hello all.

I have a general problem with my PC when I watch video. Whether it's small clips, longer clips, or entire movies is of no importance, just like the resolution and FPS on what I see, does not make any difference to the problem. It is very frustrating, wich I'm sure many of you guys in here understand.

No matter what video player I've used so far, I always experience STUTTER.
I've tryed: VLC player 64bit, Windows MP (Windows 10), Movies and TV (Windows 10), MPC-HC (64 bit), DivX Player and 5KPlayer.

This happens every few seconds (1-30) intervals and at random times. Looking for example at a 10-second clip, which I have recorded in 2.7K at 30FPS, I can experience it after 3 seconds. If I see the same clip again, it can happen after 5 or 8 seconds, so it's not the clip itself that's the problem. I can also be lucky to see the whole clip, without any stutter at all.

Paradoxically, I can play hardware demanding 3D games such as Borderlands 2 (most CPU demanding), Euro Truck Simulator 2, or American Truck Simulator, completely without graphics problems. The last two games are the most GPU demanding.

Computer specs.:
Windows 10 Pro 64bit
Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4GHz
16GB RAM
GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
Newest drivers in general.

Good advice and help is more than welcome.

I'll second that, when you get the player up, hit SHIFT-F10 to see the details on the video.
You may need to use Handbrake to downsize it for your device.

Use DivX media player and if you purchase the $20 License you get access to DivX Pro.

Thanks.
Tested, but without luck. Make no difference what player I use.

If one of you has a flawless and unedited clip (20-30 seconds) with motion I can retrieve, I'd love to try it. So a recorded short clip, directly from the camera storage - please.
Personally, I think the problem occurs because of Windows 10, or an option in it I don't know about. As I remember, I did not encounter problems in Windows 7 that I used earlier.
My current Windows installation is clean and up to date.

hi flydk - i see your computer specs are better than mine (i7;500U 2.7ghz; 8 Ram, Nvidia 940mx 2 gigvram - windows 10 64bit) - i do not have the same problem as you and therefore i wonder if perhaps your issue is not computer settings related. can i suggest that you right click on your desktop and in the option you will see 1 section for nvidia and another section for your i7 core. Maybe have a look around in those settings to see if there is a playback on monitor setting that needs to be adjusted?

perhaps you already done this but otherwise try a disk cleanup - delete all cache files ect and check to see that defrag has also been done recently

The problem could be you're using i7-6700. This is a sixth generation Skylake processor not optimized for 4K. Intel released 7th generation Kaby Lake processors that were optimized for 4K?

Thanks for your comments and suggestions Bekaru.
I've been through all the settings I can think of and can not see there's anything I can change that can solve the problem and since all of my disks is SSD, fragmentation can not be a problem.

General cleanup I do on a regular basis. But in order to rule out eventualities, I have reinstalled a system backup a few days ago - not like system restore, but as a brand new installed Windows. After updating the system, drivers, etc., and without using the computer for anything else, I once again encounter stutter with the mentioned video players.

I gradually think more of a hardware conflict.

You might be right about that. But in that case I have to live with it for some time as the money does not reach for another CPU atm.

Just no, a i7 6700 should easily be able to play 4K videos.

YIIHAAAA - Fixed it.
A little search, and a BIOS flash... Just like that.
What a relief.

While I was in the dark engine room I overclocked the CPU to 4.2GHz. It still stays on the good side of 80 degrees C at full load.

Try using KODI, download it from Windows App Store, or the open source from: kodi.tv  See if that works for you?

It will play 4K but 6th Gen isn't optimized for 4K. Intel states this on their website and confirms beginning with 7th Gen and up. Not all 4K are the same depending on how high in the video quality, some computers will skip and drop frame rates.

I get your point, but that's just some marketing talk. Trust me you don't need a high end CPU to play 4K.
There is nearly no performance improvement between CPU generations, more like 5% or something. What really changed everything now was Ryzen, forcing Intel to get 6 Core (i7 8700) to the mainstream market. Still, a 4 Core CPU can easily do 4K. When it comes to editing, more cores are prefered, obviously. (If the software supports it)

Yes, it's also my experience with DJI's 4k video with a bitrate of up to 100 Mb/s. In fact, a reasonably fast HD is worth more than both the GPU and a fast CPU. Even my 5-6 year old i3 laptop can play 4k without the Nvidia GPU being in use.

I have 6th Gen Skylake m3 and several 7th Gen KabyLake i7 computers. I notice the difference with 4K playback and rendering.

According to Cyberlink, which is the only 4K certified Windows Media Player, specific reference states 7th Gen KabyLake and up:

Glad the BIOS update worked for you, and 80 degrees C at full load sounds like hyper-throttling the CPU a bit.

good to hear - i am not into gaming but 80 degrees sounds pretty high - maybe an upgrade on your cooling system?

I'm gaming a LOT, and 80 degrees Celsius is perfectly fine for a Core i7 at load, I've been told.

I do a lot of number crunching for world community grid, my i7 CPU, older generation 6 core runs at 72C using a water  block. My air cooled GPU sits at about 75C when crunching CUDA projects.

I really know little about this topic, but in reading up what I take away is Intel Core 6th Gen and earlier can play 4K but each generation skips less frame rates per second (FPS). Supposedly, 7th Gen Kaby Lake and 8th Gen Coffee Lake are both optimized for 4K, meaning they play 4K consistently at the considered standard of no less than 30FPS.
