Yeah, I've just done a bit of research into the reason why it's improved and it appears the sensor and processor have been upgraded on the Air over the pro which enables the higher bit rate and FPS. It takes a bit of the sharpness out of the image too.
Credible sources indicate that the Mavic Pro apparently uses a Sony IMX377 sensor and the Mavic Air uses a Sony IMX477. There is also an upgrade in the image processors. The Mavic Air apparently uses an Ambarella H1 image processor which is the same one that was in the Phantom 4. The Mavic Pro is said to use an Ambarella A9, which is the same image processor that was used in the GoPro HERO3. However, the processing capabilities of the MA camera prevent image quality to be the same level of the P4P mainly due to the size of the drone preventing a larger camera and sensor. If true (nothing confirmed by DJI) then that definitely explains the improvement in the image quality, which is noticeable when comparing both drones. Though they both share 1/2.3" size sensors with similar megapixels but as you know the spherical pano's are taken at 32mp on the Air and the construction of the gimbal design is, IMO, the biggest improvement the Air has over the Pro - the horizons are just straight no matter what flight mode you use or the wind speed.
