Aside from brightness - what is the advantage of the smart controller? I am thinking of getting this - but wanted to know any recommendations of whether I should get it "with" the smart controller - or without...?

It's extremely subjective and colored by how affordable the SC is for you. I personally find the ease of use worth it for the SC. This is a well engineered quality product. It feels solid and so far works flawlessly.
