I have seen threads about flying the Spark without the app.  I used the ⏸-Fn-Alt combo to start the motors as described.  However, I still have some questions:

• What mode is the Spark essentially in without the controller?  P-mode/Atti mode—does it even use GPS & GLONASS?  If so, I assume RTH works & the flight will be as stable as with DJI GO (?)
• I understand the Spark will record media, but do I have to have the app open to insert the SD card i.e. will it format correctly?
• If there is a required firmware update, will the Spark take off without the GO app?
• Are there any serious downsides, apart from not being able to receive warning messages, of not using the app?

To take off just pull the joysticks down and to the side diagonally left for left stick and right for right stick simultaneously.
