You might have noticed a few other mines across the valley from Berry No.1.
There were 11 mines along the Berry deep lead and together they produced 53 tons of gold.
But the shareholders of Berry No.1 were very unlucky.
As the shareholders of the surrounding mines were getting rich on dividend cheques, Berry No.1 shareholders were asked for extra money a number of times because of ongoing problems with the mine.
They had to tunnel much further than anticipated to find gold and had continual problems with water flowing into the mine.
The brick ruin is what's left of the pump house that held the steam engine that drove the 60,000 gallon per hour pump that was needed to deal with the flooding.
After twenty years of mostly unprofitable operations, the mine finally broke even and closed. |
