Hiya,

Nice flight with my MM, no errors but the Quickshot Circle mode did not perform as advertised.
Happily i had enough height to prevent a crash.

My lesson learned again, always be prepared for the unexpected ; do not trust your drone for 100%.

cheers

I noticed similar behaviour during one of me last fly.

I think the circle Quickshot is designed to track a person.

DJI has "point of interest" for other drones which will track around objects but it's not available on the mini

yep that is what circle does unfortunately, i have tried it numerous times it always ends up on top of the object and have to stop it on time if it gets too close. That is why i stopped using it and i do it manually. not sure why we need it if it works only in very limited scenarios.

i think circle & helix quickshot depend on object shape. if object had a different shape on different angle, mavic object algorithm hard to recognize the same object.

My guess is the software is designed to work out the centre point of a person and go around that, for a large object It gets confused about what the centre point should be.
It can treat a person as 1d effectively, a large object needs 2d for depth

I would suggest making the box you want to circle maybe a bit smaller. I wonder if you would have better results. I have tried the circle quick shots and have had no issues on my MM. Worth a try maybe.

i noticed this as well. It's very weird, it initially seems to correctly understand the distance to its target as it starts a very large circle. But then, about 20% into the shot, it starts closing the circle, like it has a maximum radius or something that it suddenly remembers it forgot about. It's especially weird because as it starts, its orientation is at 90deg compared to its direction of movement (basically moving almost 90deg to the right/left) and it ends up flying straight towards its desired center object.

Yes definitely it doesn't work for large objects or areas. In my last test video I targeted a large cycle track area and the drone ended on the top of it instead go around it.
In the windmill case I wonder if it would behave better if the target area was one of the mill's wing

yup, you're right. when the object had exactly same look at any different angle. i think it's no problem.

Yes, the marked object is too indistinct and looks different during the orbit, especially due to the wings, so that it is finally lost. Maybe it would work if you marked the upper part of the roof. Of course better, it would have more contrast....not brown, but red.

JJB, I remember seeing a video, posted here in the forums, very similar to this some time ago not long after the mini was released. Ironically from what I recall, it too was a windmill. I've never tried to circle a building or other object as such, only people and it works ok with people. Sometimes gets a bit of center but does ok otherwise. But I have seen very similar videos on youtube of circle attempts of a building and it not work out very well.

That sounds like a logical assessment of the Quickshot algorithm.  I've used it a couple of times with people and it executed relatively well.

It was still a notable effort... I liked the framing, I would have let the Mini continue

You look the same from every different angle? o_O

Does such a big circle works fine, when a human is in the center?

guess they don`t have windmills like this in China.....

I normally fly all shots manually, but since the MM has such good fly time....time for other things as well

Hahahaha. Maybe.
Yes, I actually never used the auto features.
Maybe it is time to try some today.
