I was clueless on this when I first saw it in the Record menu settings.  I Googled for info and most of the articles I read said H.265 is the way of the future and better than H.264.  That's why I'm using it.  I did have to download to my desktop an app that makes it read H.265.  But my desktop is 4 years old...most newer ones should be fine, I would think.

Here is a good article on comparison:  https://www.videoconverterfactor ... 0H.%20265%20has%20a,to%20lower%20the%20cost%20of%20storage%20and%20transmission.

Obviously, this is an ad for a converter and I really don't plan to do any converting, but it does give some info on the differences between the two.

I'm not so sure that DJI's implementation h.265 is any better than h.264. The file size is suppose to be smaller, yet when I ran several tests h.265 wasn't any smaller than h.264 for the exact same duration. I also couldn't tell any difference in video quality between the two. And then you add in the additional load placed on hardware to decode I decided to just use h.264 whenever possible.

The skinny is that h.264 offers wider compatibility at a given data rate while h.265 packs more image data into the same rate but requires a more performant system for playback.

I've been using H.265 with my earth bound camera so sticking with that for the MA2 - though I do wonder. I see with the P4P the max 4k frame rate can only be achieved using H.264. I'm guessing there's less load on the graphics engine when saving into that format. I'm no software engineer so I couldn't tell.

When Archiving or exporting from editing though I'd use H.264 for maximum compatibility.

As I use slightly elderly hardware (kinda like me really) I use .264 except if I feel I need one of those higher frame rates.  I do wish we had the choice across all frame rates, and find it annoying that I don't.  With this 1/2 inch sensor, there is little difference in the two, its negligible.   Disk space is super cheap, so that argument can go out the window.

Hey DJI, let us have the choice please.  Thanks.

I drive a 22 year old car and a 21 year old boat. So I (age 72) use the oldest format ;-)

Depend of your needs...if you use normal recording instead od D-CIne, go to H264...you will not gain any advantage...On contrary, if you want PRO and use D-Cine and edit on Premiere, use H265 as there is more data that gives you countless possibilities...(video editors knows it).

Hardware limitations (iPad)  dictate that I use H264.  Like Dirty Bird mentioned, 2.7K @ 60 fps should do ok for social media/Youtube

If I want the absolute best I shoot H265 for the extra data but editing to a h264 high bitrate project in post.  You need a really recent and decent rig to edit H265 efficiently.  For some it might be best to proxy edit.
