Hi.

I fly regularly the Mavic 2 Pro and the Phantom from boats and in extreme conditions. However, one thing to always bug me, is that you need to stop the boat when you launch the Mavic 2 Pro, but not when launching the Phantom. Why is this? I tried to have a look in the developer tools, with no luck og becoming wiser.

It seems it's controlled in the software somehow because the drone will lock it self from taking off as soon as the platform it is on is travelling at 20kph or greater.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's a video, so you guys can get an idea of what i mean.

but not when launching the Phantom. Why is this?
At 0:35 you'll notice that the drone isn't fighting to hold position as its position is changing due to boat movement.
The flyer will have put the Phantom into atti mode to do that.

Hello there Sorenwk. Thank you for reaching out and for posting this intersting video on how to take off while on a moving platform. In addition, I will post a DJI Guide link on How to Fly Safely Over Water ( https://store.dji.com/guides/how-to-fly-safely-over-water/ ). Thank you and fly safe always.

I have atti mode configured for my mavic so i can turn it on and off with the button that normally puts it in tripod mode. However this so doesn't solve my problem of the drone being locked by the and not being able to take off.

Hi Stephen.

Good guide for beginners. However there's nothing in there that deals with the issue of the drone being locked from taking off when it travels more than 20 kph.

Out of curiosity, doeas this 20kph rule apply to all moving vehicles, like cars trains etc, or does it has something to do with the sea's up and down movement?

I will have to confirm my theory, but I believe Mavic generation is recording home position immediately AFTER vertical launch, while Phantoms does that while still on the ground. This, however, is impossible with the ground moving at 20+ knots speed. Perhaps it has something to do with flight mode (P or A) selected prior to launch. In Atti mode Phantom may simply ignore Home Point as irrelevant (no GPS lock), while Mavic will not allow for such?

I guess you are right, because no-one ever posts a link to a video made by someone else.

I think the problem with the mavic is that even in ATTI mode the GPS is on and locked - its just not used for position holding.  It still records its location, home point, speeds etc.

Ive had it refuse to take off previously from a rolling but stationary boat.  It comes up with IMU initialisation errors so thats another potential issue - it needs to be fairly stable for its self checks before its ready to fly.

Correction .. Even the avatar looks like a boat too.
With are just a few minor differences.
Like one is a 22 metre long Volvo Ocean 65 with a crew of 10, built for round the world racing.
The other is a 2.6 metre long Mach 2, made for slightly shorter distance racing with a smaller crew.

Never solved this annoyance. Biggest problem I have owning the Mavic 2 Pro is this disability. I hope the Mavic 3 doesn't have this issue. I understand the security this feature brings to the drone for normal users. However for more "extreme" users this is a huge problem, that severely limits the Mavic 2 Pro and forces us to use the old Phantoms. Can we have a special "mode" for us people working on ocean going boats that needs to fly and get footage.

Aside from the 'problems' , still a cracking piece of video. Mind you, you wouldn't find me anywhere near a 'boat' that size in a sea like that one!

Only way I've found to get it launched, is to screen the GPS with alufoil, start the motors, then take the foil off while motors are spinning and let go. All this while going upwards of 40 knots with water everywhere. Not the the safest and easiest thing dealing with alufoil. Would love to be able to turn off this "safety" feature. But I guess I'm in such a miniscule group of people that operates in such conditions.
