I can not get my smart controller to update or install the latest firmware as of 10-01-2020.  The WIFI efforts work and the direct PC connection don't work because my smart controller is not recognized by DJ Assistant, what do I do????????

Hi please check if the DJI Assistant 2 is the latest version V2.0.4, try to reinstall the software and try again, https://www.dji.com/gr/downloads ... ant-dji-2-for-mavic
When connecting the smart controller to the PC, please ensure charging is selected, instead of file transferring.
Besides, please check if there is  “RM 500” under “My computer”, and by checking the Device Manager, there is no yellow exclamation mark for MTP. If no RM500 and there is a yellow exclamation mark for MTP, please install the latest DJI Assistant 2 to completely install the necessary drivers. Additionally, you can install MTP driver manually, or switch off the USB debugging. See if this helps.
