Whenever I take road trips I use Google Earth to scout out photo ops.  A  lot of the time from the highway, you can't see anything spectacular  but just getting 100 feet up opens up a whole new vista.  Google Earth lets me find really unique spots. This shot is  an example...and imagine what my shots from overhead look like!!!

I scout out most locations in advance with Google Earth, measure distsances and elevations from my prospective homepoint to features I want to capture.  Generally I follow up the first flight after reviewing its footage with a second flight, where I actually plan carefully what it is I am aiming to do.  So a recon flight, then a cinema flight...  I also use apps to check that same airspace for wind, restrictions, etc...   the imagery in Google map apps is sometimes rather old, so that first flight often confirms or surprises me with the actual features.
