This will only make it harder on drone pilots but the question begs is how high was the drone or how low was the helicopter. if the drone pieces fell by the pilots house he must have been flying above his own yard space.

CORRECTION: Not sure how high this guy was flying.  It looks like I confused this incident with one that occurred with an LA news chopper back in December a year ago.  It was that one that was reported at 1100 ft.  So I'm not sure if the details yet on how high this guy was flying.

Also, in the US, once you are in the air, you are in the air and there is no “yard space” or concept of personal property. So from a legal standpoint, it doesn’t matter if he was above his house or not.  

Hitting a helicopter at 1,100ft at night while flying over emergency responders.  He managed in a single flight to violate most of the Part 107 rules.  Kind of hard to explain to explain to the Federal Authorities.  I hope the FAA views him as a lone idiot and a not representation of drone operators as a whole here in the US.

In the video he claimed to be at 400ft.

Its a real shame this happened and I wonder if this person has even read the FAA laws on UAV flying (doubt it). I'm just glad the pilots were okay because lives could have been affected by this action.

Not as much as helicopter pilots actually flying and being hit by the idiot stood on the ground. An example should be made so people know it is a one-off case and not all of us are tarnished with the same brush as the stupid ....... idiot!

That moron and people like him are the reason Mavic Air 2's will not be allowed to be flown near people in the UK at the end of next month. Why we have to pay money to the state to put a number on our drones to identify ourselves to the police. Why people give you evil looks for taking some photos in a field. As I said, lock him up and throw the key away - he really does NOT matter one bit in my eyes!

Glad it wasn't worse, though this guy really harmed the hobby and individual commercial industry.  I am completely wary of flying around my area, because helicopters can easily fly around at a pretty low altitude, at any given time.....and this is in areas clear for flight (under regulations).  I haven't had the desire to fly it at night, as that is when I know the worse can easily happen.  If it weren't for the current politics and corona scare, people would probably be all over this story.
