Hanstein Castle is set at the top of a tiny village in the corner of three states of Germany: Lower Saxony, Hesse and Thuringia. The castle was first destroyed in 1070. It was later rebuild and partially destroyed again in the 30-years-war of 1618 to 1648, never to be occupied for a longer period of time again.
A few scenes of the movie Medicus (2013) were filmed here.
Below the castle is the nice little parish church of the village Rimbach.
Castle Ludwigstein is right across the valley - one can just about see it with the naked eye. Built around 1415 it was used to secure the border between the neighboring counties. Today it is used as a youth hostal.
