1.  Can anyone tell me what amount of weight triggers the payload mode?  Trying to take that into consideration as I look at accessories.
2. Are you risking damaging the drone motors if you fly in payload mode?

Hi there. Thank you for reaching out. There is no specific amount of weight that is available to enabled the payload mode, once the unit detects that there is a payload, the drone will automatically show you the message about payload mode. Also, it is safe to fly in payload mode as long as you only install the propeller guards on the unit. Thank you!

So at least you know that at the very least the weight of the prop guards will trigger it..
