OM3 ONLY works when plugged in?

Hi, I got an Osmo3 Mobile today, which I think was a refurbished one but it was in the box with the stickers on. I charged it for several hours and also overnight just to be sure, but every time I disconnect it from charge, the power fails and I get a blinking red light to indicate the battery is dead.  When it's plugged into the wall everything works as it should, but within seconds of disconnecting it, the device fails.

When it was plugged in I checked to see if there was a firmware update but there wasn't, and everything else seemed to be functional. As per usual, DJI itself is nowhere to be found because it's not a new and shiny product, so I am relying on the forum.

Is there's something I'm missing or is this one just busted?  Any help is genuinely appreciated.
