Whenever I connect my remote to the DJI software on my laptop it states it can't download firmware list......

Any ideas please

Do you see updates for the drone? If not it may be the same issue as covered by  

I've seen that happen before.  I had to log out of my DJI account and then log back in and it then found firmware update.

The DJI web site lists "DJI Assistant for Mavic, 2.0.14" as the correct software for Mavic Air 2.  The web site is wrong.  That package used to work (and still does for the drone), but can no longer find firmware for the Mavic Air 2 Remote Controller.

You need the "DJI Assistant (Consumer Drone Series), 2.1.8".   Although the web site doesn't show this package as compatible with Mavic Air 2, the release notes say it has been compatiable with MA2 since Nov-2020 -- and it works!  The "DJI Assistant (Consumer Drone Series)" is the correct DJI Assistant for the Mavic Air 2 and the Mavic Air 2 RC.
