Aha! DJI's false advertising is playing tricks on consumers here.
Mini 3 Pro has a 1.3" sensor, about 60% of the size when compared to the 1" sensor inside Air 2S. And Air 2S has 20MP pixel count. For both models to have the SAME pixel size, Mini 3 Pro's sensor should have 60% of the pixel count of Air 2S sensor instead, which is 20MP x 60% = 12MP.
With a 48MP sensor inside Mini 3 Pro, DJI is doing pixel-binning here, combining four pixels into one, to produce result comparable to larger sensors.
The biggest downside of this approach is your resolution is effectively divided by four when taking a pixel-binned shot. That means a binned shot from a 48MP sensor in Mini 3 Pro is actually 12MP. If you want to capture 48MP images, the actual pixel size is 0.6 µm instead. The noise level must be terrible, if you want to capture 48MP images at low light, high ISO condition.
www.dpreview.com has a sample gallery for Mini 3 Pro, and most of the sample images, except two, are 12MP. And the two 48MP images, when zoomed in at 100%, look soft and lack of detail. This explains why.
