Still waiting for my mini 3

What software should I be looking at to do the color grading for 10 bit?

For Davinci Resolve, unfortunately you will need the Studio version (=paid version), a workaround for this is just setting the color mode to "normal", as this is 8 bit. Of course then you can't you use the D-Cinelike and 10 bit, which is kind off a bummer, but I find that the "normal" color profile is OK.

You may be able to export in 10 bit in free version Resolve. When rendering / exporting your video (Deliver button), you can try selecting color space rec.2020 / HLG , rec.2021 would work as well and for color profile instead of Main, you can try switching to Main10. If you are able to select Main10, you would export in 10 bit.

Im using Final Cut Pro X.

Wow I am jealous DAFlys. How do you find it? I heard newer MacBook laptops come with HDR 10 bit mini led backlit screens, unfortunately PC laptops seem to be far away from this except for some companies just beginning to try  something similar, but not sure how successful, i.e. Asus and Lenovo.

Hey Szymko. Do you find it better than Final Cut Pro X? Usually people on Mac OS end up with FCPX for some reason, just curious.

I mostly use a 2015 MacBook air,  picked it up for £400 a few years ago and it blows away even the latest Dell or Lenovo laptops I’ve been issued by work.

Do you need a 10bit display to effectively edit 10bit footage?

Wow that sounds like a good deal you got. I heard FCPX is heavily optimized for Macs and the hardware is superb too.

Ideally you would need an HDR 10 bit display to properly see colors.

Yes.  It works nice.  I don’t even need to unlock the Mac. It detects my watch and unlocks automatically.

Wow that is a nice feature they have. I actually also have a MacBook Pro from 2012, it is no longer supported by latest software, it has 2 or 4 GB of Ram and it is very slow. I was thinking of trying FCPX on it, but it probably won't be able to handle h.265 files with 10 bit video, probably wouldn't even be able to run FCPX on it at all.

LumaFusion is the first movie edit software I bought, so I can't compare. I bought it specifically for mini 3 cinelike 10bit h265 edits and colour grading. I think the price is quite reasonable and the rendering is fast.

Nice it seems to be $30 , that is much cheaper than any color grading software out there that I've used, Premiere Pro subscription is $25 or $30 per just one month. Davinci Resolve Studio is over $200 I think.

I dont think the MIni 3 Pro records in HDR10.

As far as monitors go, any normal computer screen will do for Mini 3 editing.

HDR10 uses a colour profile of BT2020 which is HLG (Hyper Log Gamma ) and is not what the drone supports. Yes, you would need a specialised monitor for BT2020, but to be straight up, its a mini 3. Don't go overboard on hardware if you aren't delivering to a client who specifically wants certain specs. Your Mini 3 records in standard REC709 like 98.9999% of the worlds cameras do. 10bit only benefits you when you are colour grading. The data rate is only for very high end commercial applications and the normal day to day enthusiast does not require it. Hell, I have been filming for commercial work for well over 10 years with 8bit, never had an issue.

So if you own an Apple Mac, you can use Final Cut Pro X ( one off fee) or Adobe Premiere (ongoing monthly subscription) or iMovie (free with all Apple computers and tablets)

If you own a PC then Adobe Premiere (ongoing monthly subscription)

If you own an iPad then use Lumafusion (once off payment) or iMovie  (free with all Apple computers and tablets)

For everyday, non commercial use, the average consumer wouldn't even notice what the benefits of 10bit are. Just edit your videos with whatever software you have that works and is economical to run. Unless you are filming for Netflix who are very particular on video spec, your drone footage will look beautiful as always and nobody will say less.
Just an addition, many people go crazy on producing an insanely graded video. Just understand what looks good on your monitor doesn't reflect on the millions of smartphone, tv, laptop, tablet screens that are going to be displaying your video. Each will be a different in contrast, brightness, colour, gamma, nits etc. Just take my advice, FLY, FILM and SHARE for the world to see. I guarantee nobody is going to look for whether you filmed in 10bit or not and if they do then they are not your target audience.

I just did that search and found some ads for bogus emulators to run LumaFusion on a PC.

Here is the link to the official luma fusion list of compatible devices.

Hello there Drone Sketcher. Good day and thank you for the inquiry. Since this is a 3rd party software to Color Grade you work. I hope that our fellow DJi co pilots can share what Color Grading Software they are using and can give out the best recommendation with regards to this matter. Thank you.

Hey Daniel,
Since D-Cinelike is unsupported on Davinci Resolve (free, Windows)--but is supported on the Studio version, do you know a workaround or an appropriate conversion to edit/color grade my footage in DaVinci Resolve, the free version?
I'm just starting out and was pretty bummed after finding out this blocker.

you are hopefully also aware that colorgrading (especially for HDR) is only possible via a video I/O and an external calibrated monitor!

You can use Final Cut Pro. But beware that with D-Cinelike 10 bit footage from the Mini 3 pro, you need a powerful enough computer for the rendering. I have been editing 4k/30 fps footage from my mini 2 with no problem whatsoever (without proxy), but it is a different thing with 10 bit footage. My MacBook Pro (late Intel processor) with 16Gb of RAM does not do the job.
