When flying in manual mode, is there a difference between hitting the pause button and just switching to S or N mode?

I ask because my finger natually wants to sit over the N/S/M selector but I'm wondering if there is a different/more appropriate set of control laws used when activating the pause button vs. the N/S/M selector.

In other words, do the control laws engaged with the pause button offer better recovery than simply switching to S or N mode?
