My drone is not an airplane...

Just to be clear, my drone is:

"A remotely controlled, gimbaled photography device mounted to an atmospherically maneuverable quadpod stabilization platform that incorporates a plurality of computer-controlled motors actuating lightweight petals providing atmospheric buoyancy with integrated collision avoidance for safe operation, and is most definitely not an airplane."

I dont think the FAA would agree with that.

They might if you taped it to a long pole.

Nice try but FAA will still classify that as an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS).

But sir, my drone is tethered to an extension rod and the flight is not controlled by a remote controller.

Yeah, that might work.  Bit of a technicality but you can bet you'd be on their radar from then on.

Kind of reminds me of a sailor that was able to beat a speeding ticket in court because the radar gun had not been calibrated within the required time span.  However, for the next 2 months he seemed to attract patrol cars following him wherever he went.   Fortunately, he went on a 7 month deployment and by the time he got back they already had a new target to follow.  I know he wasn't kidding because he brought footage of many of the times that he got followed and it was for mile after mile.

I've won in court versus cops on multiple occasions.

In one case I won because the lines on the pavement were not painted in accordance with what the cop was trying to write me up for, I made the cop look kind of dumb in court which was fun in itself...

Within a couple months of my winning the ticket, those road lines had been completely repainted in a way that would have made the ticket valid....

LOL

Not targeted so much at the FAA as it is at the city of Los Angeles…

Technically a quadcopter is somewhere in the definition of a rotorcraft I'd think...

No guessing about why the lines were repainted then.  You won the skirmish but look who will win the war.

That sounds like he had a case for harassment.

It is but very, very hard to prove in court, even with plenty of evidence.  Seems there is a silent "code of blue" that will come around to haunt you.  So best for all to just move on and use it as a lesson learned.  Most law enforcement officers are good guys/gals but there seems to always be one or two bad apples to ruin it for everybody.

There's also a few bad apples.

Dang, that really looked like it was a drone video right up until the end.  Starting to see more and more places banning drones.  This is not a good sign.

Venice banned them many years ago,   there were a lot of incidents of drones hitting buildings and the ground is a maze of little narrow streets so it's easy to hit people and of course loose signals.

I'm sure drones were banned for the reasons you pointed out and more.  I remember my one and only trip to Venice.  There were so many canals and bridges.  It was easy to see why it was the greatest seaport in the late medieval ages.
