Thanks for all your gracious comments about my Woodstock picture. Here's some more images of pastoral Vermont; this bridge is north of Woodstock in Queechee, on the same Ottauqueechee River. The farms and red barns are typical of this 'brave little state', raising diary cows for products such as Cabot cheddar and Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
Great view of the covered bridge. Is that a common thing there, to roof them over?
The third shot reminded me of the Falun -type buildings I've seen in Scandinavia.

Most folks assume it was to prevent the buildup of snow and the subsequent melting and refreezing which ices the bridge, but both these bridges were built back when horse-drawn sleighs with metal runners were used. Covering the wooden bridge protect the whole structure from weathering and rot. It was easier to repair a roof than trusses, etc.
