For curiosity sake, and to stop the big 100% charged notification from popping up in the middle of my screen when flying.

Can the charging function of the remote's data cable connection be turned off?

Leaving the controller only being used for its data connection to my phone, and not simultaneously charging it.

I hope this makes sense what im asking, and if this has been answered previously, my mistake.

Assuming you're on an Android device, as I understand it, the answer is no - it's part of the USB spec.  No idea if that is correct, but it's been posted here before.
If you are using an iOS device I understand it can be turned off, but I don't know -  don't use an iOS device.
