I currently have a few fpv drones all set up with the DJI 03 Air Unit and I still use the DJI Remote Controller 2. I have tested the range on the remote and all is very good. When the VTX signal is down to 10MBS the remote bar would still be at 100%.
My big question to have peace of mind for long range is if the VTX signal on the 03 Unit is lost would it also kill the TX signal. If no then there is no reason to get an ELRS or Crossfire receiver, but if it does then the change would be a must.
