After playing with iMovie for a few years, I'm thinking of making the $300 leap into Final Cut Pro X...  Users out here have any feedback?  How's the learning curve? And finally, is it worth it?

Yes, its worth it.  Pretty easy to learn, just watch some of the YT videos to get started and the rest will come with time.

You can use it like iMovie to start, but it has some pretty powerful features.

I am very fluent with Final Cut Pro 7 but have not made the switch to FCP X yet. I hear it's just a suped up iMovie. If you came from iMovie you may like it.

I love it - well worth the investment... Very intuitive if you're coming from iMovie background, but tons of powerful stuff in there. Can be a bit frustrating trying to figure out how to do certain things but lots of info/videos online...

For the price FCPX is an amazing piece of software.  We use both Premier & FCPX after good old FCP7 bit the dust. I would believe if you are familiar with iMovie (never used it mind you) you have a good start on its functions.  One good thing about FCPX is there are a myriad of effects & plugins you can get to trick things up a bit, although it does come standard with some very cool effects & tools.  On the downside its a bit of a learning curve for people used to track based editing where FCPX uses what they call a magnetic timeline (which you can overide to a point).   None the less the end result is only limited by your creativity.

We've used FC7 in 3 edit suites until it finally bit the dust - Upgraded a year and a half ago to FC-X and have not looked back.  Its an amazing piece of software.
Currently we have two edit suites running FC-X and Premiere - While both are used (depending on the project and editor) FC-X is usually the choice.
sheprods is right - there are many effects and plug ins avail too.

Yes, I do.  FCP7 is very difficult because it doesn't like H.264, FCPx is a dream and works great!    If you have a powerful computer it works natively, otherwise it can automatically create proxy files for you to edit with until you are ready to master, when  you seamlessly switch back to your original files.

I held out with FCP7 for a few years but recently made the switch and am very happy with it.  I still use FCP7 for some specific things but pretty much all of my editing is now done in FCPx.

Thanks a lot. I haven't made the switch from FCP 7 to FCP X. What I've done with my DJI Phantom 3  ...

My tutorial covers transcoding footage for use in FCP7 as well -

FCPX is so night and day compared to 7. Go for it!
