I was able to recover the unit . I was only about 10 feet off the ground. I was not recording but noticed that the gimbal started to act erratically then went into a spin and went down.  I have exported the flight logs and imported one of them into Maps Made Easy  and I can see the sudden drop in altitude and speed. How can I determine the cause of the failure? Firmware is at the lastest (1.4.0010) as well as the DJI app on an iPad mini 3, batter was half full.

I did. As soon as the gimbal  stared moving around I let go both of the sticks to see if I was leveling out.

i have seen a few videos of the exact same issue; gimble starts to act erratically, then p3 just pulls to on side and drops from the sky!!! and in all the cases the owners have stated and shown the video and flight log that they were not doing anything out of the ordinary, no CSC, good gps and compass but suddenly the errors occured. check your compass values, or better still do another compass calibration making sure you are away in middle of a field away from everything, leave your rc and device 20' away. first though, do a cold IMU calibration.

Thanks rayrokni! yes I have been reading the posts as well. Already did a cold calibration and values look good. I always do a compass calibration every time before I fly just to be safe. My fear is I won't be as lucky next time. I have an S1000 and a TBS pro both with A2's in them. No issues.. I will be flying low and slow for a while. I flew every night this week with no issues.

constant compass calibration could be more harmful than not doing one!!
i have done one compass calibration when i first got the unit and then one after the firsrt fw update. i have not done one, for testing the theory, after the latest fw update. i have flown over 250+ flights and traveled over 1000 miles from the location of the compass calibration.
read up on this constant compass calibration and you may be surprised

Hi. Just a follow up to this. It appears that I have a faulty ESC. Turning it on i received a beeping from the left front arm but it's intermittent. When I tried to throttle up when beeping it gave me a message about the ESC. This would explain the reason for the flip ( I have experienced this before on my first TBS). This should be a warranty item and I will contact the shop where i purchased it from last Tuesday.
