Container Ship in the Harbor. I had this on manual focus by mistake so it's not crisp but it was worth putting up.

Very nice capture Charles.    I was just looking at the vessel stats for MSC Mirella and she is one busy container ship.

This one was coming through as I was setting up. I just caught the stern as it was passing. I wish i got it broadside earlier.

Isn't it always about the timing?  Sometimes you get lucky and others not so lucky.  Still made for a great shot.

You're welcome.  With all those containers onboard and stacked that high it has to be hard seeing forward just in front of the bow from the bridge.  I'm just guessing but I'll bet they have cameras mounted on the bow somewhere.

You would think that would be an issue. I wouldn't want to be a small boat in front of that.

Yes. you would wonder the effectiveness if trailing behind like that.

Maybe it's the pilot boat, following to collect him once the vessel has left the harbour?

You're right about that.  Navigation Rules of the Road do dictate the rules.

There is a "pecking order" that can be used as a simplified memory aid to determine right of way for vessels of different types. The lower most vessel on the list is the give way vessel, and must stay out of the way of vessels that are higher on the list.

    Overtaken vessel (top priority)
    Vessels not under command
Vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver
    Vessels constrained by draft
Fishing vessels engaged in fishing, with gear deployed
    Sailing vessels
    Power driven vessels

Collision Avoidance:

Rules apply to vessels in all conditions of visibility. Rules are the same at night or in fog, for instance, as they are during a bright sunny day.
Every vessel must maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing at all times. Operator inattention and not having an adequate look out are a leading cause of accidents each year.
Every vessel must proceed at a safe speed at all times.

I need to learn more about that. No knowledge on that level.

Sorry, that was probably too much info.  Just means that the little guy has to watch out for the bigger guy especially when they can normally maneuver faster.

Not too much. I find it interesting. The rules on the road aren't as specific.

The Rules at Sea are not complicated but if you fail to follow them and a Coast Guard craft is nearby and sees it you'll get boarded and fined.

The way it should be. Too many accidents at sea. Lots of kids get hurt doing the wrong thing.

Yes, this is a lesson that you definitely don't want to learn the hard way.  Even though I've been on and had boats for many years I've found that taking an occasional boating safety class just helps to refresh the rules and/or reinforces them.

It seems like all of the hobbies we have require safety courses. It must e the thrills we are going for.
