Today I got into a hurry and zoomed off before “home point” confirmed.  A couple of moments later I began the “bring it home” sequence and of course when I touched “land” and expected the RTH button to appear, the drone immediately obeyed by plummeting straight down into huge trees! I cancelled and hit UP.  Not thinking fast, I somehow determined I just missed something and DID IT AGAIN.  Drone said fine and began subside dive straight down again.  Even a slow horse finally gets with the game and when I hit cancel and shot it straight up again, the darn thing shot back up out of the trees and I brought it home safe.  Luckier than I deserved!  LET THE HOME POINT SET PROPERLY. I’ve got all on video!

Do have a question.  When I got it back manually, it refused to land in grass that was to tall.  Was it because it saw the tall grass?

Good reminder. This is most def part of my preflight checklist, right afterthe check for a "green" GPS lock..

I doubt the drone "pummeted" or "dived" anywhere.
If the drone is launched with insufficient GPS to set the home point at the launch site then the drone will set it to wherever the drone happens to be when the GPS is appropriate BUT you can reset the home point with probably three options being available
1) the drone's current location.
2) The controller's location. (needs location services etc. on the attached-phone/controller switched on )
3) Some point on the map chosen by you .
You should google how to do that.

With regards to the drone not landing, the software can reject the landing site if the downward looking sensors show that the site is unsuitable. There are several threads that discuss this, again try a google. For my non mini 3 drones holding the throttle closed over rides the rejection, your drone might require something different..
You could always flatten the grass or use sort sort of landing mat or learn to hand catch the drone. I favour the latter.

I assumed I rushed taking control on take off. As to my poor choice of wording, guilty.  Thanks much for the guidance.

Hi there,

Thank You for reaching out. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience you are experiencing. The aircraft need to record image data of the takeoff point before leaving, requiring a vertical ascent for a certain distance (10 meters recommended) before moving horizontally. If the aircraft starts a fast horizontal flight at a height of less than 1 meter, it will be unable to capture enough photos of the takeoff point for matching during the landing phase.

For landing ground textures at the takeoff point are essential for clear recognition against adjacent areas.

I hope this information has helped to clarify your inquiries. If you have any other questions, kindly let us know. Thank You!

I got caught out a few days ago, because home point was 1.5km from the controller point. I drove the drone 6.5km out to a hill range lookout, then came back without RTH, and found I was moving over territory i didnt recognize, with 25% left in the battery, before my curiosity got more desperate. Luckily the plus battery is so large, i managed to fly another 1.3km.

However, i have no idea how the home point ended over there. Probably just a random bug in my phone GPS reader.

Once, i pushed RTH to get an accurate heading into the sunset, but the drone lurched to the side, so i quit, and ignored it. Sometimes my drone does a 180 before deciding which direction is home.
