Flying the Neo over some old traintracks, I flew the Neo a good 30m away, and eventually got the warning "max wifi distance" so I instantly clicked to bring it back the other direction.
Too late - cellphone disconnected
A screen comes up counting to 20 to reconnect, I got a good 10m closer to the drone to reconnect but nothing,
Ended up having to jump a couple of fences and once I got under the drone it finally reconnected and I brought it down.
It was hovering in the air thankfully where it had disconnected.

Questions -
Once the battery on the drone ran out (a min away probably) ,
would the drone
drop out the sky,
descend on that spot,
try to come back to initial takeoff?

I don't have any faith right now to fly the drone in manual mode anywhere I can't easily retrieve it
If I buy a controller this issue doesnt matter anymore correct?

I think you will find that it is all in the manual...

The manual states RTH if connection lost from controller, and landing if out of battery but has no information or mention of what happens if the drone

a: flys its self out of cellphone range
b: looses contact to the cellphone due to issue with cellphone or the app

Obviouslly if you loose connection you can't bring it home,
along with giving bare minimum video settings in the app,
there should be an option for the drone to return towards takeoff as soon as looses connection
Comeone DJI, if your going to push this method of controls give us bare minimum required settings at least

Try again to read Page 28 and page 29 regarding flying the neo using a mobile device...

RTH is NOT supported...

I also don't think the Neo can fly itself out of cellphone range...

It absolutely can. They set a distance of 50 meters but every phone has different wifi quality/antenna.
If you fly until signal is low, the Neo will not go further, but wifi signal is not consistant so the drone can will suddenly disconnect from your phone at this range.
The auto reconnect on the app does NOT seem to work in any circumstances, tested this many times in controlled enviroment within a meter from the drone.
The only way to reconnect is to get physically closer to the drone and start the connection progress in the app from the start.
DJI needs to be more clear that the Neo SHOULD NOT ever be flown where it cannot be retrieved using phone controls.

There are also many basic features missing from the app that have already been talked about hundreds of times on here, but yeh it doesn't feel good to pay full price to beta test a new mobile control system.

Yes, but that's your choice (your doing) of letting the little drone fly until the signal is low....

You have the choice of control... The drone, does not...

Hence, my previous statement...
