I'm wondering if the Action 4 original front lens protector (the screwable glass) is compatible also with Action 5.
Given that the Action 5 one has an awful multi-faceted design, i'm wondering replacing it with the one from the previous model as i have one spare.

The front of lens is slightly bigger by a mm or so on the OA5

The front lens protector of the action 4 and action 5 transpose on each other perfectly. I know this, because I just tried it. I would think that it'd be waterproof too given it's fit, but of course I cannot vouch for that.

Not a problem, just guessing. I only think the outer ring has a bad design. It may be stylish (questionable) but that's all.
