I'm not familiar with the Standard - I have a P3Pro. However...
Signals are strongest "broadside" to the antenna. If your antenna is pointed directly at your Phantom, it's getting the weakest signal you could send it. As suggested above, make sure your antenna orientation is at its best for the strongest signal to your Phantom. The further away your Phantom gets, the more you probably want to have your antenna pointed straight up. If your Phantom is closer and pretty much overhead, you want your antenna pointed straight out.
Again, I'm not familiar with the Standard version. In the manual for the Pro, the antenna orientation is briefly discussed and there are a couple of pictures illustrating the proper technique.
As you fly, you may have to adjust your antenna now and then.
