Hello,
does your IPAD air2 MUST have celluar- GPS to use the  DJI P3P, having in mind the RC unit itself has GPS?

No cellular needed (in fact in can cause more problems). All iPads have built in GPS.

I think only cellular versions have one

And second: is there a point of turning on  the GPS on the device (tablet or phone) while using the RC?
...may be the GPS- ON mode on the tablet is needed only for the "FOLLOW ME" mode...
refer that : youtube.com/watch?v=oP-OjN3T5Gk ---(02:01min)

You do not need cellular service to fly.

"And second: is there a point of turning on  the GPS on the device (tablet or phone) while using the RC?"

You only need GPS in the tablet to use the follow-me feature or to reset homepoint to your location if you have moved during flying.
For 99% of flying there is no need to have GPS in the tablet.

OK, if that is the case how can this be explained?:
- I have an IPAD mini 2 space gray/black face Wi-Fi only ( I know what I bought). When I go in the middle of the boonies in the desert (no cell coverage and no Wi-Fi) and open the map app, the IPAD finds my location and puts it on the app map.
If there is no GPS built into the IPAD and no cell or Wi-Fi coverage, how is my location pointed on the map?

The RC's GPS sets the point on the map on your IPad mini via the connection cable.

Look up the specs for your Ipad
See how it goes locating itself out in the boonies somewhere when it's not connected to your controller.

Yes, you can certainly cache your flight area maps, while at home and connected to yourWiFi network,
but that doesn't necessarily mean they will still be available, once you arrive on location. I have had mine disappear on route.

By the way, If you do have an iPad Air 2 Cellular, (or other similar device) with a cellular network connected,
That will also give you the ability to stream live videos, of your flights to your personal YouTube channel, once you have it all set up.
