Remote Signal Loss @ 400ft

I have a new Phantom 3 Standard, and I seem to be only to fly it to 300, sometimes 400 feet before it loses remote signal and has to return to home. From other friends who have Phantoms 3 Standards, they seem to fly much further. Not sure if I'm doing anything wrong, or just need to return and get a new RC.

I'm flying in areas that are very open (big parks), so can't see much interference, but there is a large airport (LAX) that is 6 miles away.

Thanks in advance.

First thing to check is the antenna orientation.
Point the flat side of your antenna toward the Phantom.

OK .. 2nd point
If you are going straight up above you, that's always the worst point for strong signal.
You get much better signal out away from yourself.

The Phantom antenna is in a vertical leg on the quad, so the antenna on the RC should also be as near vertical as possible. The technical term is 'vertical polarisation'. Flat side isn't relevant in your case.

Fly no higher than 400 feet and remain below any surrounding obstacles when possible.

Also, I never fly at night but with 4 days of rain ahead of us, I just brought it next door to the park to get some screenshots of the Signal errors I'm getting. See these two photos below and you can see my issue. And I tried the antenna completely vertical, flat, etc. Didn't want to fly out far given a night time flight, so only went a little distance away. Signal was weak, and I was in an open large park - in one screenshot only 9 feet away, although 360 feet up, zero remote signal

You will get better signal if you go out further, you are almost 400ft up and directly above you.

Thanks! Assuming I'm in an open area, what's the average range (distance) I should get in feet? I believe with perfect conditions it .62 miles, around 3,000 ft. Is that actually realistic?

I suppose I could also get an extender if I have issues, have also seen some DIY tutorials

The flat side - not the point of the antenna

I have the same issue. Check this thread out that I also started. I am unsure if this fixed yet as I haven't had time to get it in the air. http://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=38847&extra=page%3D3%26filter%3Dtypeid%26typeid%3D235%26typeid%3D235&mobile=2

in unobstructed area your range should be 1000m in FCC mode and 500m in CE mode.
