With people getting there new phantom 4's I thought I would remind everyone that they need too put there FAA registration number on there drone. If you don't have an account you must make one at the FAA website before you fly.

I'm sure everyone flying a P4 will rush out and register their drone to be FAA compliant.

I did my FAA registration the day the box arrived (not unwrapping it for 9 more days) and already printed the registration sheet (which I will carry with me whenever flying) and several small labels (with the extras as backups) to use to put one on the drone, hopefully inside the battery chassis.

Are their people willfully ignoring the law?

Hopefully we hear some examples of that getting actually enforced or it will be meaningless.  I have no problem with the registration.  They aren't preventing me from reasonably using the drone.

The "big" issue (in my eyes at least) is the "commercial use" side of things with the FAA, pilots license...seriously ridiculous.  But it does look like things are changing soon!

Seriously, you think that way? You said "hopefully "  so because someone doesnt register, you wish ...

LOL. Anger management issues?

“STFU”?  “Socialist scumbag”?  I can’t get the image out of my head of you in your Star Wars Stromtrooper outfit calling me “Rebel scum!”

You seem to have leaped to some huge assumptions.  First of all, you missed a few key words in the law – “up to.”  “Up to” a $250K fine, “up to” 3 years in prison.  Most laws have far different maximum penalties than typical ones, and judges usually impose them proportionately with maximums in the most egregious cases.  Someone flies their drone over a freeway, crashes, causes a car to swerve and start a pile up and someone ends up in a wheelchair for life or dead, then tried to flee the scene.  The guy flying his drone harmlessly in a park who gets called out by a police officer because someone else was annoyed and gets caught without a registration isn’t going to jail or facing a big fine.  I seriously doubt they’d even bother to file a report.  They aren’t going to waste their time with trivial no-harm cases.

The reason I hope we hear about enforcement is these rules are generally sensible (not the commercial part which is still getting sorted out) and without some evidence of enforcement they will be totally ignored.  In California where there is a minimum fine of over $500 if you get caught using the carpool lane without the posted minimum passengers and where they do sometimes enforce it, I see far fewer proportion of people abusing it than in NJ where tickets are extremely rare and minimal and where 95% of the people in the lane are by themselves.  Without a law and penalties even if someone did something reckless there isn’t always a means to charge them.  Now there is, to be used when needed but not have any impact at all (minus $5 which is trivial compared to the drone investment) on those not doing anything wrong.

My conscious is doing just fine.  You may want to look up the meaning of the word.  While you’re at it you may want to study up on political ideologies because you aren’t using socialist right either.  But perhaps it’s just a general purpose derogatory for you.  In any event, unlike you apparently, I mean no one harm and no one not harming someone else has anything to worry about here…

Ah, back to your old tricks, eh Brian?  Just when I thought you'd become human.

If you can't speak your mind without insulting someone, you don't make them look bad.  It makes you appear uneducated and easily intimidated.

Shall I call you a judgemental red neck who wraps himself in a flag?

I think your language and demeanor should get you thrown off this forum.

So what exactly is the story here? I just picked up a Phantom 4, and in one ear I hear people saying that Registration is mandatory, but in the other ear I hear that the FAA does not have the authority to regulate model aircraft. They have implemented policies, however they also do not just create enforceable law. Only congress does that, so is it now a written enforceable law that you must register?  I have to ask, because I am unfortunately not in any position to get negative attention from the FAA, as I am a licensed pilot and aircraft owner, and they could mess with me pretty bad if I pissed them off.  That brings me to another question... The FAA contests that they have the authority to regulate the operations of anything that meets their definition of "aircraft", but that would then also include everything from spitballs to foldable paper airplanes to golf balls.  All are specifically designed to be flown through the air. But also by their definitions IF a model quad-copter is an "aircraft", then it would fall under the rotor-craft category, and I am in fact a commercial Helicopter pilot, so does that make it legal for me to use my drone for commercial aerial photography? It is certainly legal for me to do it in an actual Helicopter if I want.

Someone can and may eventually sue to let the courts settle it, unless Congress were to specifically act to supersede (which is pretty unlikely at the moment).  Until then you are taking your chances.

The FAA is the sole body in the USA they controls the air and they sent to congress and passed legislation that makes you pay only $5 to register your drone and put a sticker on it (or marker or whatever) like a license plate so when the drones start killing everyone like they think they already are, it's traceable to you.

Tom - since you are a licensed pilot, you can fly your P4 for recreation/fun all you want, but need to register your P4 (FAA website).  it takes 2 min and costs 5 bucks.  After that you just need to put the registration number on your P4 (read website for details).  This is pretty simple to me.

However, if you want to fly your P4 commercially (for $$) you need to apply for a Section 333 exemption from FAA (details are also on FAA website).  I've filed for mine.  at the moment this process is taking too long, but like I said before, things may be changing soon enough, at least I am crossing my fingers and hoping for it1

I registered and I'm not even a US citizen, stuck that little tiny sticker with my reg# deep inside the battery compartment and it was fun, I didn't feel violated...maybe my Phantom felt a lttle violated with me placing that sticker up deep inside her but that's between me and her...they even gave me back my $5 US which is a lot of Canadian Peso's by the way ;)

I don't have any stickers, I haven't registered anything and guess what?? I'm flying today, tomorrow and yesterday. I highly doubt that local law enforcement will know the codes.... Brian... Cal down there buddy. I understood what he was saying and I doubt anyone was asking to have someone fined, you seemed to jump right off the cliff. Relax man, we're all here to fly and have fun.
