What do you guys use? Tried using Adobe Premiere but it's very slow on my rMBP and pretty complicated. Plus I'm thinking it didn't even import the 4K video.

Try Final Cut Pro, it is optimised for Apple devices.

Do you use a Microsoft or Apple based system? For Windows that support 4K:

But based on if you have limited GPU and Ram the higher end ones will slow you down.

The rMBP has a pretty crap tactic card but 16GB of RAM and a decent i7 processor. I have windows and OS X on it. My Desktop will be better of course, but I'm not around much to use it. Not to mention the resolution is only 2560x1600 even with a 30" monitor.

Sadly, 4K video is not what you want to be editing with that machine.
1080 would be fine, but 4K will make is go SLOOOOOOOOOOW...

Here's the video about rendering 4K on a Macbook, it can prerender which speeds things up (assuming your CPU supports this).

This is interesting. Fortunately the specs on the 15" rMBP are a lot better than the basic Macbook, so that gives me hope.

With this in mind, should I do any transcoding and rendering on other machines? I have a server that's on all the time and could easily do this. The problem I see with that is that it's running Server 2012 R2, so there would have to be a Windows program that would be compatible with Apple's software...or I'd have to Hyper V an OS X install. I do currently have CentOS running on a Hyper V that's sacrifice-able to any other OS that I would need to install.
