Slap a bunch of feathers all over and you have yourself a waterproof bird.

Sure it can fly in the rain but first you would need to make it water proof. Water and electronics don't mix.

i opened this thread thinking SERIOUSLY?      glad you weren't serious.    Some of the serious questions, statements, and issues some people have/think they have really make you want to bang your head.

most things just need common sense.   this post,  a sense of humor

It's just physics.  Birds are waterproof.  You can prove this by trying to hold an eagle underwater for a couple of minutes.  You won't be able to,  unless it is dead when you start.  For some reason,  death destroys the waterproofing.  And the Phantom was never programmed to hold its breath.  ( Bad programming ).  But if you strap on some air tanks or a snorkel,  it does just fine.  I have tried it.

Basicaly the drones work on smoke. When you see that the smoke goes out, it doesn't work anymore. Simple as that {:2_40:}

Put the clockwise blades where the anticlockwise blades go and fly it updside down. This displaces the water.

Yeah but those were only albatross feathers, you have to mod it to use dodo features.

Modern electronics can be made waterproof pretty easily at the manufacturer level or some post-processing with various advanced coatings.

The problem isn't just the waterproofing aspect. The problem is the communication. 2.4GHz, which is one of the only legal to use bands for civilian communication use, is easily absorbed by water. Its why your might lose radio coms with your bird behind a lot of trees (high water content). So when it rains, or the weather is foggy, the likelihood is your radio communication will be iffy. Flight dynamics might be affected too in heavy rain.

The biggest problem, if you are trying to shoot material, is that the lens gets covered by water droplets and the shot looks like crap.

I'm from WV, USA, so I suggest using duct tape to cover up all the vents and the motors. I would also spray the gimbal and camera with a healthy dose of WD40 to repel water. It should be good now to fly in the rain!

Do not forget the radio, it will get wet faster than the aircraft itself.

Rain drops and clouds do not affect GPS/GLONASS signal, but a coating of water does. So if a coating formed on surfaces there could be a problem. There are different types of precipitation: rain, drizzle, freezing rain, wintry mixes, etc. In some cases coating may form rather quickly. So it may involve not only getting a quad-copter and radio waterproof, but also de-icing, anti-icing, selecting the right de-icing fluid for certain conditions, etc.

Aircraft weight and flying qualities may change too.

lol - interesting... this thread was intended as tongue in cheek - but seem to be getting some 'semi' serious answers... didn't realize apparently even if it WAS water proof - is that true - the signal really would not get through?

Thinking about it... that doesn't make that much sense. Cellphones I believe are on a 2.4 GHz band - and they don't "drop" calls if it is a heavy thrunderstorm... so............ is that inaccuratte? (the 'waves' getting absorbed into water?)

You also have to make sure you are registered with the fish and wildlife preserve for when you go drone fishing.
