I'm thinking about getting the P4. Can anybody confirm whether or not obstacle avoidance works while using the active track feature? It's not a deal breaker I am just curious.

Yes as long as the drone is following you.   There is an option that allows the drone to fly backwards if you approach it. If you set it to fly back the avoidance is disabled while going backwards.
