I have updated the firmware for both the RC and the Phantom 4. Do I need to do anything else for the battery firmware? How can you see the battery firmware #?

connect drone and rc and see if it tells you a firmware update is needed,   if everything is green you are good to go, no more updating required!

If you have additional packs they will be updated as well when they are powered up in the craft.

I have additional batteries. Will the RC state update needed or will it update automatically ?

So if I'm understanding this, it sounds like with the P4, a copy of the current battery firmware is stored in the P4 itself, and the P4 automatically writes new firmware to battery packs as needed?

If there is a battery firmware update, the app will notify you.

Just recieved my two additional batteries from DJI for my P4 today and was going to ask if there is a special procedure to follow to put them into commission. So I take it I should charge them and then fit and see if the DJI-Go app tells me if they are up to date or not and go from there?

Yes, charge them up and if you do not get any update requirement message then there is no update.
