In DJI GO, go to 'Main Controller Settings' / 'Advanced Settings' and scroll down, you will see 'Remote Controller Signal Lost' chose which option you want 'Return to home', 'Landing' or 'Hover'. And that should help.
Do always the check list before fly. Return home is the best option. when Landing option is chosen you risk to much cause the bird can landing no matter where, in a lake, river a roof, or in another place you cant reach it.
Don't forget to make sure ALTITUDE of RTH is high enough to clear all obstacles ...
AND don't forget that you can actually guide AC round items while still RTH acting ...
AND don't forget that if AC is at higher altitude than RTH setting when RTH kicks in - it will stay at that high altitude till you make it descend or it gets vertically over Home Point.
On the subject of return to home if the RTH is set at say 50M but you are flying at 100M when signal is lost or RTH initiated will the drone descend or RTH at its operational hight?
If it drops to 50M and there are obstacles in the RTH path and the drone is a P4 series and has collision avoidance will it be effective in avoiding the obstacles ?

Your Phantom will never descend to RTH.
It will come home at whatever altitude it is if higher than RTH height.
Obstacle avoidance will work if enabled and conditions are suitable (good light etc)
