Since im converting my videos to 1080p, is there any benefit to shooting in 4k? Isnt it easier to just shoot in 1080p and skip the conversion process?

Thanks
Craig

I found this mentioned elsewhere in the forum :-

This gives a comparison between the two modes. I saw a guy give a more technical description of why, I'll see if I can find it.

And you're always future proofing to a point.

You future proof your videos by shooting in 4k.  Someday 4k will be the new standard.  I already have a 4k tv and computer monitor.  Videos in 4k look amazing.  When the day comes that you get a 4k tv or monitor, you'll be disappointed watching your old videos in 1080p on a 4k display.  It's like watching standard definition on a high definition tv now.  It's annoying.

Yes is the answer to your questions. However, converted 4K footage pretty much always looks better than straight 1080 footage. It also gives you latitude to zoom, pan, crop as well (and even animate those properties!). Lastly, if you ever need to stabilize your shot, the extra resolution makes it much easier and gives a better result (depending on the tracking software you're using, we use Mocha for everything here at the office).

In my opinion, you may explore more possibilities of the 4K video in editing.

4K an UHD are two different formats and if comparing to 1080P, you should be talking about UHD, not 4K.

UHD is the 4K version of 1080p 16x9

4K format is the 4K version of 1K film at an aspect takin of 1.85 (anamorphic) as opposed to the less anamorphic 16x9 TV UHD.

When you're bored or want to be bored, watch this video I made explaining the different resolutions and formats.

Also, there is a theom that I forget the name of that states, you start with the best and you will end up with the best deliverable. So starting at 4K and down-rezzing to 1080P is going to give you a better image. Furthermore you are not only future protecting for 4K but also 5 or 6K as you can up res 1080P to 6K but you can 4K.

It always look cool if your Youtube video has 4K resolution option for others to watch.   I think it ranks your video higher in the searching results too.
